HUME COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH STATEMENT OF FAITH

The Bible
The Bible was written by men who were divinely inspired, and therefore God is ultimately the author of Scripture.  It is authoritative and constitutes God’s full revelation to humankind.  It contains truth without error.
God
The one true living God is eternally revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Though distinct persons, these three are without division of nature, essence or being.
Jesus Christ
Jesus is the eternal Son of God who, in the Incarnation, was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He died on the cross for human sins and secured salvation for humankind.  He then rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.  Jesus is both fully divine and fully human.
Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit exalts Christ, convicts people of sin, enlightens the minds of believers and empowers them for service.
Sin and Salvation
By free choice Adam and Eve sinned and brought sin and death upon the entire human race.  Jesus Christ is the only answer to the problem of sin in our world.  Salvation is offered freely to all who accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour.  Salvation includes salvation from spiritual death, sanctification and empowerment by the Holy Spirit.  Our church believes that salvation can only be attained through Jesus Christ as there is no other name by which people can be saved.
The Church
The universal church is the body of Christ and includes the redeemed of all ages.  The local church is made up of baptised believers who are associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel.  Each local church is autonomous but cooperates with other churches.
Sacraments
Our church practices the biblical example of believer’s baptism.  Baptism is by immersion and is for those who have given a public confession of faith.  It symbolizes the believer’s faith in the crucified, buried and risen Saviour and it represents the believer’s death to sin, burial and resurrection to a new life in Jesus.  The Lord’s Supper memorializes the death of Jesus and anticipates His second coming.
End Times
Jesus will personally and visibly return.  The dead will be raised and Christ will judge all human beings.  The righteous will receive awards and dwell forever with the Lord in heaven.  The unrighteous will be consigned to eternal suffering in hell.

This Statement of faith was accepted by our church at a quarterly members meeting of Sunday 4th June 2006.
